Joseph Kabila
has been the President since 2006, when elected in free elections. He has the support of many Western governments and regional allies.
Today, there are still many conflicts present in the Congo.
Civil war
between government troops and rebel groups is causing political unrest, and a lot of violence.
The
violence
is leading to damage and a lot of internal displacement.
There are also extremely
high poverty levels
in the Congo, even in comparison with some other central African countries.
Deadly
diseases
such as HIV, malaria, diarrhea, pneumonia, and cholera are all extremely prevalant issues, as well as
malnutrition
.

million people have died
in the Congo since August 1998.
Sexual violence
towards women is also an important issue.
There is very little assistance available for medical care or PTSD counseling.
There is
corruption
within the government and government officials.
